"Boys have peeing contests, but girls-and
later women-are more ashamed of nudity," says Cathy Conheim, a La Jolla, CA, psychotherapist
who decided women needed more chances to compare their bodies to real bodies-not
just to ideally beautiful ones. The result is the statuettes pictured at left-portraits
of 13 women by T.J. Dixon. (The "Real Women Project" can be seen in a traveling
exhibit called "The Changing Faces of Women's Health," or visit RealWomenProject.org.)
The Canyon Ranch Health Resort uses
one set to help women work on their body image." Once women understand that in
the quest for a 'perfect' body they demand the impossible of themselves, they
can begin to change," says program director Huffman.
